Chapter Seventeen

Maggie

Hello, and I’m Savannah Sage. We start our broadcast this evening with breaking news. Overnight, three men were shot and killed outside Bright Foundry. Police are not revealing the identity of the men and do not know if this was a random or targeted attack. Right now, they are handling it like a homicide, and we will keep you updated when we know more.

I turned off the TV and tossed the remote on the coffee table.

Random or targeted?

Oh, it was definitely targeted. No doubt about it.

Jinx had only been gone forty-five minutes when he walked back into my apartment last night, and I had catapulted myself into his arms.

I had been absolutely terrified the whole time he was gone that something bad was going to happen.

What-ifs had raced through my mind, and they were only quieted when I was back in Jinx’s arms.

“You ready?” Jinx walked out of the bathroom and shrugged on his cut.

“It was on the news.”

He tipped his head to the side. “What was on the news?” he asked.

“There were three guys killed overnight at Bright Foundry,” I explained.

“Really?” Jinx brushed off his shoulder. “That is horrible. I wonder why they were killed.”

I raised my eyebrows. “The news said the police don’t know if it was targeted or not.”

“Well,” Jinx drawled. “I don’t think Bright Foundry is in the best neighborhood, so maybe it could have been random,” he suggested.

That is where Jinx had gone last night.

He was keeping his promise that the Triple Zeros would all be dead by the time he was done with them.

“Are you going to be hanging out with Mace again tonight?” I asked.

Jinx tipped his head to the side.

I twirled my finger in the air. “Thin walls, Jinx. I didn’t even have to strain to hear him when you walked out the door last night.”

He hmphed and grabbed his keys. “Once this is all over, you’re getting a better apartment, sweetheart. Living where your neighbors can hear your every word is not my idea of a good place to live.”

“I live here because the rent is cheap, which means I have more money to spend on things other than rent.” I hopped up from the couch and grabbed my purse. “I just know to keep my voice down.”

I hitched my purse over my shoulder and followed Jinx out of my apartment and to the elevator.

“You got everything you need?” he asked.

“Just need a bottle of wine from the liquor store.”

Jinx nodded and pulled me into the elevator when the doors slid open.

I texted Jemma right away this morning to apologize, and she talked to me like I hadn’t been a bitch to her.

Jemma really was a true friend because she didn’t hold my crazy mood swings against me.

She had wanted to come over with coffee and to catch up this morning, but I had been able to fend her off, but only until tonight.

Jemma already had plans to go to the clubhouse, and she insisted I needed to come, too.
